Just Carrying On

March Madness is just around the corner

We are two weeks away from selections Sunday. Who will the Top 4 seeds be?
Here are my picks even after 2 of them lost yesterday. Kansas
Kentucky
Duke
Syracuse

This year has been such a fun one if you are a college basketball fan. Not so much fun if your team was ranked #1 at some point, but all in all a great year.

I can't think of anything more exciting than the tournament. I don't like when people talk about expanding the field. It makes no sense to me for teams to make the tournament with losing records in their respected conferences unless they win their conference tournament. 65 is the perfect number.

This was kind of a rambling post, but this is what you get when I just put my thoughts down without much editing.

Who do you predict wins it all?

My pick is Syracuse. I love the 2-3 zone and how it plays to their advantage in transition.

A New Project

Over the past 6 months I have been dreaming and planning and thinking about a website idea.  This idea has finally come to life. With the help of Caleb Luke we hope this can be a place you can be honest and be yourself.

Ministry Scoop

The basic idea is to explore ministry and the church through story, community and technology.  One site I would loosely compare it to would be what John Saddington is doing with Church Crunch.  Church Crunch is one of my favorite sites.  I'm definitely learning through this process and loving every minute of it.

I could explain more, but I will let you check out Ministry Scoop to see where we are headed.

If you want to guest blog on Ministry Scoop please email me and we can make it happen.

Drops Like Stars with Rob Bell

On Thursday night I had the opportunity to see Rob Bell on his Drops Like Stars tour.

Here are my notes from it.  If something doesn't make sense please ask and I will try my best to explain it.

Set aside the "why?" questions of suffering
When suffering and pain occur we should be asking what now, not why

We have expectations of how things are going to turn out, and then when they don't turn out how we wanted them to we suffer.
The tomorrow we were planning on is no longer there.  We are forced to come up with a new tomorrow.

Through suffering comes honesty

Why do we answer "good" when people ask how we are doing?  And then when we answer honestly people get uncomfortable like they weren't really wondering how we are.

Difficulty brings clarity

What is it about suffering that makes us more aware?

Jesus tells us that peace comes through sacrificial love.

When we suffer we want answers.
The clear answers to "why?" don't really help.  What helps get the healing started is presence and flesh and blood.  "I don't know why, but I will walk through this with you"

Maybe the cross is God's way of saying, "I know how you feel."

I know this all seems scattered, but I was trying to listen and write at the same time.  I struggled in doing this.  I hope these little snippets make sense to you.

My 2010 reading list

I love to read.  During my internship at Saddleback Church one thing that Rick Warren drilled into us, was that leaders are learners.

Other than my mostly daily reading of the Bible these are the books I hope to read this year.

Have you read any of these or do you plan to?  Any thoughts on any of these books?

Desire of the Everlasting Hills by Thomas Cahill

Forgotten God by Francis Chan

Excavating Jesusby John Crossan and Jonathan Reed

Jesus Wants to Save Christians by Rob Bell

The Bible in the Light of Our Redemption by E.W. Kenyon

Biblical Literacy by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin

Walking the Bible by Bruce Feiler

Mere Christianityby C.S Lewis

Our Father Abrahamby Marvin R. Wilson

Sketches of Jewish Social Life by Alfred Edersheim

Mad Church Disease by Anne Jackson

The Gospel according to Moses by Athol Dickson

How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordan D. Fee and Douglas Stuart

How to Read the Bible Book by Book by Gordan D. Fee and Douglas Stuart

Getting Things Done by David Allen

So, there is my list.  I have a lot to do in the next 10 months.  I hope to have them done by Christmas, but who knows.

Tornado image was NOT from CA., but from FL

I posted a pic earlier of a tornado that, I was told, was from our storms yesterday here in Southern California. After researching and from a guy who lived in FL I have found out that this pic was from a tornado in FL. I apologize for this false post. I learned a great lesson though. Check your facts.

Once again I am sorry for this.
